CLASS TRIPS

At Balmacewen Intermediate School we strive to make learning relevant for our students. We encourage strong links with our local community and we want our students to be active participants in their local surroundings. This means that at least once a term our students will venture outside of the classroom to places like the aquarium, Museum, Orokonui Ecosanctuary, Moana Pool for swimming lessons or the Edgar Centre for a sports event.

Rather than have a separate notice for each of these events, we have created one generic permission slip which will act as permission for all of these activities. Of course teachers will still email the important information and finer details to parents and students before trips. Transport will be by either walking, bus, school van or private vehicle. More significant school trips such as school camp, rock climbing or Beach Ed will still require a separate notice.

This permission form will be stored by the classroom teacher and will be valid for this school year while your child attends Balmacewen Intermediate School.

PHOTO AND VIDEO PERMISSION

Balmacewen Intermediate utilises a number of platforms to communicate with our parents and wider school community. This includes our e-newsletter, school website and facebook page.

The purpose of communicating on these sites and platforms is to update parents on changes in programmes, late starts and school closures, to keep our parents connected with what is happening within the school day and also to celebrate the successes of the students in our school.

We will often add pictures to our posts. These pictures could be of a team of students holding a trophy, classes on a visit outside of school,  individuals with certificates, perhaps a group shot of the choir singing. Only a student’s first name would be used with a photo. Full names may be used in a post, but not with a photograph.

Our school Facebook page is an official school page and is managed by school staff.

We would like your permission to include photographs and sometimes short video clips on our website, in our newsletter and on our facebook page. We ask that you indicate your permission below please.

If you have any questions or comments regarding this form, please feel free to contact me.

Digital Citizenship Agreement  2024

Introduction

As new technologies continue to change the world that we live in, they also provide many new and exciting educational benefits for our children.

This Digital Citizenship Agreement sets out expectations for safe and acceptable use of technology in our school. All students using school owned or personal devices are required to complete this agreement.

Students at Balmacewen Intermediate may bring their own devices (BYOD) to school. The BYOD initiative is voluntary. Balmacewen Intermediate remains committed to providing school owned devices for student use. Students will continue to have access to school owned devices under the Digital Citizenship Agreement.

Being a responsible Digital Citizen means applying the manners, respect and honesty expected in everyday life, in the digital world.

We welcome the opportunities this will provide and look forward to helping your child develop excellent skills and understandings that will serve them well in the future.

Conditions of Participation

Online Safety

Students' online safety at our school is of paramount importance. Balmacewen will actively promote cyber safety practices and the safe use of ICT through our programmes.

The Digital Citizen expectations listed below will be outlined in our school.

Online Etiquette

The school has high expectations for student behaviour. Our online expectations are exactly the same. This means students will respect the rights, privacy and safety of others and use language and behaviour befitting our high expectations.

Outside of normal school hours the online behaviours and actions of students is the responsibility of parents and caregivers.

Access

All approved users will have access to the school’s wireless network during school hours, but not normally including interval or lunchtime.

Users are not permitted to use outside internet sources (3G, 4G) during school hours.

The school’s network filter will be applied to all devices . Any attempt to bypass the filter will result in disciplinary action and loss of access.

The school’s network filter does not allow access to facebook, instagram or other social media sites.

Access privileges also apply to all school owned devices.

Devices welcomed in our school are laptops, chromebooks, netbooks, tablets, smartphones, ipads that have wireless capability.

Devices need to be in good working order. The school will provide internet access via a wireless network but not on-going technical assistance.

Privacy

Students will be issued with their own school email account. This will use the @balmacewen domain and as such will be administered by the school. This account will only be available while students are enrolled at Balmacewen Intermediate.

Students will safeguard their password and not share personal details with others.

Students are not permitted to transmit or post photographic/video images of themselves or others, on public or social networking sites during the normal school hours

Security

The school will provide lockable, secure storage for devices. Students are responsible for handing in their device.

The school will not be liable for any device that is not in provided secure storage during interval, lunchtime or outside of school hours.

The school will not be liable for the damage or loss of any device whilst in the use of the owner.

Use of a device is the responsibility of the owner. Sharing of a device is at the owner’s discretion and liability remains with them.

Student devices should be clearly named/marked and be password enabled.

Students are not permitted to bring any device that may contain viruses or programmes designed to alter or damage. The school has the right to collect and examine any device suspected of causing problems.

CELL PHONE USE

At Balmacewen Intermediate we know that students may bring their cell phones to school. Our school rule is that these phones need to be handed into the lockable drawer in the classroom. Cell phones are not to be used by students during school hours unless the student has permission from their teacher.  If a student is found to be using their phone during the school day without permission, it will be handed to the school office to be collected at the end of the day. If this continues to be an issue, parents will be contacted.
