'The Heart of Arabia-a 28 day journey on foot and by camel across Arabia on the trail of British explorer Harry St John Philby'

In 2023, armed with camera traps and a 105 year old diary, and accompanied by Saudi Arabian explorer Reem Philby Mark turned his back on the Arabian Gulf and started walking west to Jeddah in the footsteps of british explorer Harry St John (Abdullah) Philby, a project that had HRH Princess Ann as patron. The lecture tells the tale of Philby's 1917 journey to meet Ibn Saud, and puts the spotlight on an extraordinary geographer and field scientist.

Mark Evans was the founding director of Outward Bound Oman, and has lived in Arabia for more than 25 years. In 2012 Mark was awarded the MBE by Her Majesty for his work using challenging outdoor journeys for personal development and learning, and in 2023 he was awarded the Medal of Honour by The Sultan of Oman for his work establishing Outward Bound in the Sultanate.
