The Mellon Initiative invites faculty to apply for funding to develop and implement a regionally focused research project (in the South Central Texas area) that includes opportunities for undergraduate researchers. The project must be a new project for the faculty member. Since this grant is a development grant, the project should still be in the initial stages of development. The purpose of the grant is to encourage faculty to think about new and innovative ways to do academic research with undergraduate students in south Texas.
Funded faculty will be expected to:
1) submit a status report on the development of the project to the Mellon Initiative eight months after the grant is awarded;
2) apply for a Mellon SURF by the second summer after the grant is awarded (e.g. if grant is awarded in April 2022, faculty must apply for a Mellon SURF for the summer of 2023 at the latest). SURF spots will be reserved for winners of this grant.
Each funded proposal will receive a grant of $2,500 ($1,500 will be paid at the beginning of the grant period and $1,000 will be paid after the status report is received)
Deadline for proposals is April 4, 2022. Please address questions to Lauren Turek (
