Greetings! My name is Nicole Jackson, park advocate, nature enthusiast, environmental educator and Black birder. I'm also the creator of Black In National Parks Week, which was launched online in August 2020. During this week, I wanted to provide a platform to acknowledge the great contributions of Black people who are too often left out when we talk about America’s best idea. It was also a space to discuss and amplify Black history, experiences, knowledge and solutions for how NPS can be more inclusive and engaging with Black park visitors.
The amount of love, support, stories and even pushback I received on social media let me know how much this dialogue was and still is needed. From this reception and after the excitement waned, I became inspired to dig deeper and build an opportunity to engage more with the storytelling of Black people's national park experiences.
So with that, I've decided to start an interview project focused on the various narratives of the Black national park experience. Talks and discussions will be scheduled for February, April, June, August, October, and December of 2021.
I hope to amplify our voices and create connections while sharing our stories and experiences.
