Maltby Intermediate School 6th Grade Year Long Encore Selection for 2023-2024
Dear incoming 6th Grade Parent:

Students may choose BAND, ORCHESTRA, MUSIC or YEAR LONG P.E. as their year-long Encore class for 6th Grade.  The Encore classes meet on an every other day or “A” and “B” schedule.   Your student will choose Band, Orchestra, Music or Year Long P.E. and meet in that class every- other-day for the year on “B” days.  Every child in the school will have P.E., Art and French as one of their required Encore classes on “A” days. Please note if your child chooses Year Long P.E. that does mean they will have P.E. everyday (A and B days) for one quarter of the year.

BAND...
Band classes will continue with instruction in music notation and instrumental techniques.  Classes will be combined for concerts.  A meeting will be held in September with instrument companies to purchase or rent instruments.  There are a number of school-owned instruments available for students to use.    Students will perform in at least two evening concerts.  These concerts will be part of their grade.

ORCHESTRA...
 
The second of eight progressive years offered in Brighton, students will build foundations in self-confidence by working toward mastery of fundamental skills on their instruments (violin, viola, cello and bass), ensemble skills, and music literacy. Prerequisites include either previous enrollment in 5th grade orchestra, or six months of private lessons prior to the start of the school year. Three required concerts per year.

MUSIC...
Music is a comprehensive class which provides exploratory activities in vocal music, drama, movement and music technology.  Students will create and produce original performances that include these elements.  Students will perform in at least two evening concerts.  These concerts will be part of their grade.

YEAR LONG P.E...
Students in sixth grade will learn about and participate in traditional sports such as soccer, (touch) football, floor hockey, and basketball.  Non-traditional sports like Pickle Ball, Kin-Ball, Ping Pong, and Tchoukball, will be part of their experience.  Various fitness and training concepts will also be explored, along with fitness testing.
