The seasonally employed water safety team at Lake Barcroft consists of a supervisor, operation managers, waterfront beach lifeguards, and water safety instructors. The Barcroft Beach Lifeguards are employees of the Lake Barcroft Association and certified by the United States Lifesaving Association as a professional open water lifeguard agency. The Lake Barcroft Association is also an authorized provider of American Red Cross aquatic safety courses.

Lifeguards are staffed at each of the community’s beaches from the weekend preceding Memorial Day to Labor Day, between the hours of 10 AM and 8 PM daily. The two smallest beaches, Beach 1 and Beach 5, employ a single lifeguard while the others have a minimum staffing of two, with three lifeguards being an operational norm during peak hours. On Busy weekends in July, additional lifeguards may be added to Beaches 3 and 4. The Lake Barcroft waterfront beach lifeguard works under the direct supervision of the Lake Barcroft water safety supervisor and his/her deputy managers to safeguard all beach patrons from drowning and other accidents. An opening and closing duty manager supervises day to day lifeguard operations. A break manager traverses the lake by boat to each of the beaches in order to provide breaks for lifeguards and ensure adequate lifeguard coverage. A patrol of the lake by water is provided utilizing two outboard equipped skiffs. Together the team of managers and lifeguards are responsible for constant surveillance, during the declared operational hours, of five demarcated swimming areas and enforcement of recreational rules and regulations established by the Lake Barcroft Association.

Water Safety instructors are part time employees utilized to provide community water safety education, teaching courses in swimming instruction, boating safety, and/or Junior Lifeguarding. Certification as an American Red Cross water safety instructor is desired but not necessary to apply. Instructors of learn to swim and boat safety classes do not need to be agency lifeguards.

All lifeguard positions, including supervisory managers, must successfully complete and keep current a medical physical evaluation, a swim requirement of 500 meters within 10 minutes, 21 hours of medical aid training, 6 hours of BLS CPR training, and 40 hours of open water lifesaving skill training prior to taking responsibility for beach operations. Training is provided by the Lake Barcroft Association. Candidates must be at least 16 years old. Those who pass the preliminary lifeguard tryout will be probationary employees until successful completion of the above training.
