Cardinal Play Dates Fall 2021
Play Dates is a monthly script-reading club. It's just like a book club, but for theater! Each month we'll read a different play or musical and then meet to discuss the piece. We'll read a little bit of the show out loud, talk about themes and characters, and occasionally do Q&A with playwrights or other theater experts. If you love theater and want to expand your knowledge or meet fellow theater fans, this is the group for you!

Anyone can join Play Dates for free, but members will need to purchase scripts each month (or borrow them from the library). We want to ensure that playwrights are getting paid for their work. We will provide links to outlets where each month's script will be available for purchase or loan, as well as additional resources like cast albums or video recordings.

FALL 2021 Play Dates Reading & Meeting Schedule:

September 29th @ 7:00 PM via Zoom
Blood at the Root by Dominique Morriseau

The Band’s Visit
Music and Lyrics by David Yazbek, Book by Itamar Moses
In an Israeli desert town where every day feels the same, something different is suddenly in the air. Dina, the local café owner, had long resigned her desires for romance to daydreaming about exotic films and music from her youth. When a band of Egyptian musicians shows up lost at her café, she and her fellow locals take them in for the night. Under the spell of the night sky, their lives intertwine in unexpected ways, and this once sleepy town begins to wake up.

November 17th @ 7:00 PM via Zoom
Disgraced by Ayad Akhtar
Amir Kapoor is a successful Pakistani-American lawyer who is rapidly moving up the corporate ladder while distancing himself from his cultural roots. Emily, his wife, is white; she’s an artist, and her work is influenced by Islamic imagery. When the couple hosts a dinner party, what
starts out as witty banter and friendly conversation escalates into something far more damaging.

December 15th @ 7:00 PM via Zoom
The Moors by Jen Silverman
Two sisters and a dog live out their lives on the bleak English moors, dreaming of love and power. The arrival of a hapless governess and a moor-hen set all three on a strange and dangerous path. The Moors is a dark comedy about love, desperation, and visibility.
