What is UR2PhD?
The Undergraduate Research to PhD Mentoring (“
UR2PhD”) program focuses on increasing the number of students pursuing CISE doctoral programs. To meet this goal, we are focused on increasing the quality and scale of undergraduate research experiences.
What is the graduate student mentor training course?
The graduate student mentor training course is a virtual, synchronous course that prepares participants to provide effective research mentorship. The curriculum aims to familiarize students with empirically-proven principles and best practices in mentorship. By the end of the series, participants will be capable of explaining and recognizing techniques for fostering inclusive, positive, and successful mentorship environments. They will also craft their own personal mentoring philosophy.
What are the expectations for graduate students participating in the mentor training?
Participants will agree to abide by the following:
- Attendance: You will attend all course sessions; arriving on-time, with your camera on for the full length of the sessions, and willing to participate in discussions. NOTE: Participants who have more than two unexcused absences, or who do not participate fully in the course, will NOT receive a stipend.
Participation: You will make a concerted effort to provide positive mentorship to your undergraduate mentees.
Completion of Assignments: You will complete assignments, tasks, or projects assigned throughout the program duration in a timely fashion. Assignments include drafting your mentorship philosophy and participating in online discussions.
Evaluation: To the extent you feel comfortable, you will provide feedback on the program through surveys or evaluations.
Professionalism: You will conduct yourself in a professional manner at all times, including interactions with program staff, fellow participants, and mentees.
Documentation: You will provide any necessary documentation or evidence of completed tasks or achievements to verify eligibility for the stipend. In order to receive your stipend you will need to complete CRA’s Independent Contractor's Agreement, Direct Deposit Form, and a W-9 or W-8BEN form with the program team by the deadline outlined in the independent contractor's agreement.

What is the undergraduate research training course my mentees can participate in?
The undergraduate research training course is a virtual, synchronous course that helps support first-time researchers as they engage in their first project. The course covers the foundations of research, so that mentors can focus on providing project-specific training.
Participants in the course will develop and apply practical research skills, like reading and interpreting research papers, conducting literature reviews, and analyzing and presenting data. Students will hone their research comprehension and communication skills, develop an understanding of research ethics, and build their confidence in their identity as a researcher. All concepts and skills will be taught in the context of students’ projects. For more information about the course, please visit: https://cra.org/ur2phd/for-undergraduate-students/
