Expression of Interest: Novara One Planet Arctic Programme
This form should be used to submit an expression of interest (EOI) for project proposals to contribute to the Novara One Planet applied research and capacity building programme. Novara is a sailing vessel offering researchers the opportunity to join a portion of her route to conduct their work. Projects should have a focus on Arctic trans- or multidisciplinary research which links to community preparedness and adaptation to climate change. Themes include: coastal hazard risk reduction; vulnerability; climate change impacts; climate change adaptation; community and ecosystem resilience; ocean literacy; ocean and coastal governance.

The Novara One Planet programme will run from Spring 2023 to 2026 as this spans the initial timeframe for the ship's planned route. Projects proposed here should have defined start and end dates, and be predominantly fieldwork based. Applicants don't need previous sailing experience, but they will need to contribute as crew, and be prepared to learn, undertake training, and to live aboard a confined sailboat.

The deadline to submit an expression of interest is March 6th, 2023 at close of business.

Successful applicants will need to fund their research, travel to and from joining the ship, accommodation on land before and after setting sail, and contributions to ship fuel, maintenance, and food.

How does this EOI process work?
  • The UK Polar Network Committee Members will review your EOI submission. We will shortlist the strongest proposals and present these to the Novara team.
  • The Novara team may then ask for a further, more detailed project description.
  • The proposals jointly selected by the UKPN Committee and Novara will be supported in applying for grant funding to resource their project. We cannot guarantee that funds will be secured as you will need to apply independently (with support from UKPN and Novara).
  • If you are selected, you may be asked to meet the Novara team, sail with them around the UK for a couple of days, and undertake training, to ensure that you will be a good fit with the rest of the crew.
Please see the UK Polar Network Privacy Policy here: https://polarnetwork.org/privacy-policy/
Your responses will be shared only with committee member reviewers, and Novara team members.
