Is overuse of technology a wholly new problem for millennials and gen Zs, or is it consistent with earlier trends (e.g. TV)?

One common metric for success for websites and mobile apps is time spent using the website/app, incentivizing developers to make their products as addictive as possible. Is this an ethical problem? What are some alternate metrics that will result in more social good while still maintaining economic viability?

Who's ethically responsible for ensuring smartphones don't cause mental health problems for their users? Developers? The government? The users themselves?

What activities bring the most purpose to your life? Has technology improved or hindered your ability to engage in those activities? How could it better help you?

Bill Gates noted in a Reddit AMA "A lot of people feel a sense of isolation. I still wonder if digital tools can help people find opportunities to get together with others – not Tinder but more like adults who want to mentor kids or hang out with each other." What sort of digital tools could be created to bring people together and reverse the trend of atomization in modern society?
