A note from  Guru Hemant Panwar

(Guru Hemant Panwar is a renowned  Kathak Practitioner  who has teaching and performing experience of 32 years.  He is a mentor to many  dancers around the world)

There are three Sanskrit words which I want you all to remember - Katha, Kathakar and Kathak.  The word Katha means Story, Kathakaar is  a Story teller and the story telling dance form is called Kathak.  This art form started in temples to tell the story of Bhagwan.  This is the oldest  classical dance (Shastriya Nritya )  of Northern India. ‘Nritya ‘means dance thus shastriya Nritya  means a dance related to shastra.  Kathak will engage you in your culture through  its  powerful technique , expressions, graceful movements, intricate footwork  and devotional repertoire.  Some of the benefits of learning Kathak are as follows

1)  Coordination of body and mind

2) increased focus and confidence

3)  Cultivating the personality traits such as Humility, Patience, Discipline,

4) smart and correct  posture

5) improves  Listening Capacity

6) express emotions ( Navarasa - nine basic body sentiments) through story telling dance

7) increase  stamina and flexibility and gives  natural benefit of exercise.

8)  Understanding  various Rhythms ( Taal System)  and music (  Raga system)

 9) Dancing also promotes happiness, playful attitude and teamwork

10)  Knowledge and  moral Values  by dancing on  historical scripture

 11) Motivation to understand your culture better.
