As followers of Jesus, we are compelled to love our neighbors as ourselves, especially when our neighbors are being targeted with threats and violence. Since January 4th of this year, there have been 60 bomb threats in the U.S., primarily targeting our friends and family at Historically Black Colleges and Universities, including Norfolk State, Virginia State and Hampton University here in Virginia. This is evil. This is wrong. This is sin.  As campus ministers, chaplains of colleges and universities, and leaders throughout Virginia, including Norfolk State and Virginia State, we know that there is no such thing as other people’s students. Thus, we are long overdue in speaking out and standing up in support of all students, faculty, staff, and families of all HBCUs in Virginia and throughout the U.S. We love you. We stand with you.  We deplore these racist threats of violence, as well as the white supremacist and racist rhetoric coming from too many churches and politicians, further stoking the fires of hatred that result in such heinous acts. We recommit ourselves to following Jesus more fully to combat white supremacy, systemic racism, and all forms of racism in our churches, on our campuses, in our communities, and in ourselves. As 1st John 3:18 states, “let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action.” We commit ourselves to the godly work of anti-racist action.
