The Flow of Negro Spirituals throughout Time
For
grades 4-12
February 8, 2024 at 11am
Herbst Theatre,
401 Van Ness Avenue, San Francisco
Join Alex Taite – singer, composer, pianist, and Bay Area native, as he explores the depths
and beauty of the Negro Spiritual. Showcasing original arrangements of his favorite spirituals, jazz standards, and other exclusively
American selections, Alex interweaves a vivid historical narrative
of American culture while examining how our American music stems from the trauma of those first enslaved
people who sang to pass the time in the fields or lend some
comfort in a dark room.
This event will inspire, engage,
deepen students’ connection to history and fellow
humans, and encourage them to think of modern music in new ways. The 60-minute program concludes with a talk back with the
artist.
