Common Read Book Discussions: Radical Kindness
Facilitators: varied

Dates and time: varied, pick one from list below.  Sessions via ZOOM except for one session in person at BUUF

Description:  "Radical Kindness", by Angela C. Santomero, will be the focus of book discussion groups offered as our Common Read in January and February on ZOOM.

Santomero believes in the radical power of kindness.  She has dedicated her life to teaching everyone that when you treat yourself and others with warmth, empathy, and respect, life-changing benefits follow. She believes kindness is the key to recognizing others, and ourselves, as worthy of love and understanding. The book has kindness practices that will help readers adopt radical kindness, which can transform themselves, their neighborhoods, and the world for the better.

Facilitators will help guide discussion. Some groups will have two sessions and some three.

Sign up for the group with time and dates that work best for you.

Materials: Read "Radical Kindness", by Angela C. Santomero, before the first session.  If you do not yet have a copy of the book, contact Nancy Harms at nancy@boiseuu.org.

Enrollment: Registration preferred.  Class sizes are limited.  Sign up for one session from list below.

Building Your Own Theology
Facilitator:  Rev. Sara LaWall

Dates and time: 5 sessions | Tuesday evenings | February 8 - March 8, 6:30pm – 8:00pm | via ZOOM

Description: As Unitarian-Universalists, we are all theologians. Our church, as a spiritual community, encourages each of us to become more fully aware of our own personal religious beliefs, practices, and values, in alignment with our wide spectrum of UU theologies. This UUA curriculum will help you examine your values and beliefs about God or ultimate reality, ethics, and the meaning and purpose of life.  You will search for what is true in your life. Through a combination of reflection, group discussion, study, and writing, you will examine your own spiritual history and articulate your own theology. Topics will include UU principles, UU theology and history, human nature, ultimate reality, ethics, and religious meaning.

Materials: none

Enrollment:  Class is full.  Minimum 6 participants; Expectation that participants attend all five sessions.

Drop-In Poetry Workshop ~ Ongoing (meets monthly)
Facilitator: Debra Smith

Dates and time: Second Tuesday evening of each month | 2/8, 3/8, 4/12, 5/10, 6:30pm – 7:30pm | via ZOOM

Description: Attend one or all sessions. All levels of experience are welcome because we all learn from each other. This is a non-threatening approach to short creative writing in response to a prompt. Most prompts work well to help us write poetry, but you don’t have to remember any of those poetic terms you may have once known. Each session will include mild instruction, sharing, and a long period of writing. During these classes [you do not need to have attended prior classes], participants will be encouraged to volunteer to lead one of the meetings, which entails selecting a theme and two poems, perhaps a poetic element, providing a writing prompt, and facilitating discussion.

Materials: Please have a notebook and writing utensil.

Enrollment: No Registration required, drop-in.

So You Want to Learn to Quilt!
Facilitators: Sandy Cruise and other BUUF Q-U-U-ilters

Dates and time: 3 sessions | Saturday mornings | 2/12, 2/19, 2/26, 10:00 am – noon
Location: Boise UU Fellowship, 6200 N Garrett, North Wing classrooms
Safety expectations: proof of Full COVID-19 Vaccination required. Masks and physical distancing expected.

Description:  Every year, BUUF Q-U-U-ilters create a colorful quilt to be raffled off at the annual gala auction. Monies raised in the raffle fund BUUF marketing, advertising, and outreach.

This group is always looking for new quilters or folks who would like to learn to quilt.  If you want to learn to quilt, and maybe join the Q-U-U-ilters, this class is for you.  Each participant will sew simple "crazy quilt" blocks in class. The class will focus on basic steps of color and pattern selection and machine piecing, quilting, and binding. One or two blocks would make a potholder, 3-5 blocks a table runner, and 12 or more would make a small quilt.

Materials: The Q-U-U-ilters have lots of fabric, perfect for making  "scrappy" quilt blocks. Participants can also bring their own 100% cotton fabric, if desired. Facilitators will contact participants before the first class to determine sewing machine and tool needs.

Enrollment: Registration required, class limited to five beginning quilters so instruction can be individualized.

Shaila and Rachel were classmates at Stanford Law School who reunited in Boise many years later. Shaila founded her firm, Shaila Buckley Law, to specialize in estate planning. Rachel has been Of Counsel to Shaila Buckley Law since 2020.
