Making Math More Meaningful with the Next Generation Math Standards: Infusing Technology Into Learning an Online Course

This course explores methods for teaching mathematics in grades K–8 that are research and experience-based and grounded in the contemporary theoretical frameworks influencing mathematics education today. It is designed to increase participants’ knowledge of mathematics as it simultaneously explores the intrinsic nature of math and methods for relating it to children. The course emphasizes approaches to teaching mathematics through visual representations and mathematical mindset research. This course will familiarize participants with the new set of Learning Standards to be used in daily instruction.
There are 15 weekly lessons, each varying in length, resulting in 45 hours of study. Participants must log on at least 3 times a week and complete all tasks assigned for that week. The instructor will have office hours once a week - Help desk!
At the end of this course the participants will be able to:
● Analyze the Next Generation Mathematics Learning Standards
● Compare the Next Generation Learning Standards to the Common Core Learning Standards ● Align existing lessons to the new set of Learning Standards
● Create learning activities to match standards
● Explore the Progressions of each strand
● Design their lesson so that visual learning is a strong modality throughout the lesson ● Use Number Talks to promote computational fluency
● Develop and use Three Act Math Tasks for real-world instruction
