Dancing Around Race: Moving the Conversation with Gerald Casel - June 14 & 15, 2021
*Perpich 2021 MN Summer Dance Workshops*

DANCING AROUND RACE: MOVING THE CONVERSATION with Gerald Casel
Artist, choreographer, and professor at University of California, Santa Cruz

Utilizing a decolonial approach and using lessons learned from Dancing Around Race, a community engagement social practice that challenges racial inequity, Gerald Casel will offer a workshop that reflects his ongoing research into racial politics, power dynamics, and representation in dance performance, training, and curricula.

Through a series of discussions and movement provocations, participants will be asked to explore their relationships to power, social position, and where and how they exist within systems and institutions. We will ask, "how do we approach somatic practices through a decolonize and antiracist lens?" We will also address questions regarding equity and belonging while welcoming difficult and uncomfortable conversations on race and racism.

This two day workshop is open to all dance and theater educators as well as other arts teachers. It will include movement practice, somatics and discussion.
