2024 Summer Institute Application

The Heart of Texas Writing Project is devoted to improving the teaching and learning of reading, writing, and 21st Century literacies.  We also strive to make a difference in the quality of students' school experience by educating the public about what quality reading and writing instruction is and the possibilities it holds for students and teachers.

We provide in-service professional development to schools and districts; host day-long workshops for teachers throughout the school year; and support a community of dedicated and knowledgeable professionals in literacy education. In addition, we hold an intensive, Invitational Summer Institute on the teaching of writing. What follows is the application for this Institute.

This application is due, including the form, essays, work samples, resume, and letter of support, on or before 9:00 am on Tuesday, March 26. The application for the 2024 Summer Institute is in two parts. The first part is the following form. You will be asked some general information questions, as well as some longer questions regarding your teaching. In order to avoid losing your work or submitting incomplete responses, do not compose your answers to the questions in this form. Please do your thinking and composing in a format that you can save and return to, cutting and pasting your final answers into the boxes below.

Though this is a google form,  thoughtful and thorough responses to the longer questions will most certainly fit. In fact, thoughtfulness here will work in your favor as an applicant.

For the second part, please email a current resume and a letter of support from your principal to dkelt@utexas.edu. The purpose of this letter is to ensure that your principal knows about and supports this important professional development experience, and that s/he is interested in supporting your growth as a teacher of writing.  Please also attach images or scans of your student work sample to this email. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at dkelt@utexas@edu.

Please send your resume, your principal letter, and your student work IN ONE EMAIL. These are also due on or before 5:00 pm on Tuesday, March 26. Please label this email HTWP APPLICATION PART 2. This is very important, so we can keep track of your application and avoid confusion. Please do not attach links for student work. Please download and use attachments for the student work.

All of these pieces are critical, and careful completion can indicate an applicant's commitment to our work as a project. Please also note that space is very limited for our Summer Institute, and we often have to make difficult decisions regarding applications.

Because of limited space and funding, we sometimes have to decline very dedicated and skilled teachers. Have you ever applied to the Summer Institute before? If yes, please state what year. *
To grow capacity as a writing project, we like to invite teachers who plan to stay two or more years at their current school. We know these are very chaotic times, but please do try to briefly describe your professional plans. *
Please describe your approach to teaching writing. What goals do you have for your students? In what ways do you support their development as writers? What text or person has been influential in your growth as a writing teacher? Why? *
Please cut and paste your answers below. There is no character limit.
Please describe how you meet the needs of students with different backgrounds in your classroom?  *
Please cut and paste your answers below. There is no character limit.
Choose one piece of student writing (send email attachments/scanned images -- please no google docs or links) and discuss what you see in this piece. This should not simply be the "best" student writing you have, but rather something that you find intriguing, that makes you ask questions about this student and consider possibilities for your teaching. They may also be pieces in which you see potential that might not be evident to everyone. *
Please cut and paste your answers below. There is no character limit.
As a writing project site, we sustain only through active participation from dedicated members. (This has become particularly important due to budget cuts and less grant funding.) Please write about your commitment to keeping HTWP alive and vital. How do you plan to stay involved? Members in the HTWP community stay connected by attending Saturday workshops, leading Saturday workshops, participating in study groups, attending social events, recruiting for future summer institutes, providing leadership on their campuses with fellow teachers, etc. How do you see yourself participating in our community? *
