Nurturing a New Way to Learn
We invite you to submit a proposal for a concurrent session presentation and be a part of the 2023 Kansas Environmental Education Conference, happening at Sedgwick County Zoo in Wichita, Kansas on Thursday November 2nd and Friday, November 3rd, 2023!
The conference offers a great opportunity to share your experience and ideas across the region. Individuals who have not presented at the Kansas Environmental Education Conference in the past are especially encouraged to submit proposals.
NOTE: If you are submitting more than one proposal, please complete a separate submission for each session proposal. You may select more than one theme for your proposal submission.
Session Types:
— Presentation (50 Minutes)
-- Round Table Discussion (50 Minutes)
-- Open Space Discussion (open conversation about a topic which you facilitate with starting questions) 50 minutes
— Workshop (2 hours, interactive)
-- Field Experience (2 hours, interactive) *will need to be at a locally accessible site within a short distance of the conference facility and the two hours needs to include travel time, should address one or more conference strands.
Session Themes:
NOTE: Each session should relate to teaching and learning outdoors in some manner. The following topics all have an implied tie-in to teaching outdoors and environmental education. Please keep this in mind as you are planning your session.
1. OUTDOOR LEARNING & EXPERIENCES
These sessions will focus on student interactions with water, wildlife, air, energy, waste, and ecosystems. This includes in formal classroom settings as well as non-formal education settings such as nature centers and zoos.
2. SOCIAL, PHYSICAL, MENTAL HEALTH AND THE OUTDOORS
These sessions will focus on issues related to how environmental education benefits social, mental, physical health and well-being including teaching and learning strategies, engaging students in data collection around environmental impacts and health like air quality, research and findings and fully engaging students in outdoor learning.
3. GROWING AND LEARNING IN THE OUTDOORS
These sessions will focus on EE projects, research, strategies and programs for engaging learners in the process of growing plants, including food gardens, pollinator gardens, pocket prairies, Outdoor Wildlife Learning Sites (OWLS), school gardens, urban forestry, or container gardens.
4. BRINGING JOY TO TEACHING AND LEARNING THROUGH OUTDOOR EE: How can teaching in the outdoors make both learning and teaching more joyful? Sessions could address teaching strategies for building community through outdoor learning, outdoor project-based learning, formal and informal outdoor learning, strategies and opportunties for teaching and learning in the outdoors, promoting creativity and choice through outdoor learning, or strategies for reflection and development of appreciation for outdoor learning.
5. INCLUSION AND ACCESS IN THE OUTDOORS
These sessions will focus on learning more about JEDIA work in environmental education (EE), specifically how to ensure that all students (the LGBTQIA+ community, people living with disabilities, BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) communities, and other disadvantaged and/or marginalized groups.) are included and have access to learning outdoors. Sessions focused on program and activity design and/or exemplary programs are encouraged.
