WAYJO NC is a training band for high school students wishing to extend themselves and learn how to read and play various styles of big band jazz music, including blues, swing and fusion.

Rehearsals will be in big band format and involve learning phrasing, articulation, and other basic improvisational techniques. Alongside regular rehearsals will be masterclasses, performance opportunities, demonstrations, and mentoring from current WAYJO members, WAAPA students and staff, plus experienced WAYJO Alumni.

Eligibility: School students Years 8* to 12 with at least 3 years of experience on their instruments – no audition required! 

(* students under the age of 13 will be considered if they are of an acceptable standard)

Instruments: Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Clarinet, Guitar, Double Bass, Bass Guitar, Piano and Drums (limited places on all rhythm section instruments).


2023 REGISTRATIONS open 12pm Monday 16 January and close 9am Monday 6 February 2023, or until places are filled (35 available).
