Welcome to the "Together in Jesus" First Eucharist Sacramental Prep program.  This program is designed to draw your child into a fuller and more active participation in the life of the Church. This means both in its life at Sunday worship and in the daily call to love one another. Your child will become one with Christ by receiving his Body and Blood. Eucharist is the sacrament that both nourishes the individual and creates the community that is the Body of Christ in the world - the Church. So let's begin.
OPENING PRAYER: Welcome to your "Together in Jesus: First Eucharist" Lesson 4. As outlined in the first lesson we will begin each lesson with a prayer. So, take a moment to gather at your sacred place or table and to recite, together,  the prayer pictured below.
JESUS' SPECIAL SUPPER: In Jesus' day, the Jewish people would celebrate Sabbath days and holy days with the sharing of food including bread and wine.

The Jewish people had special holy days. The feast of Passover is one of the Jewish people's greatest feast days because it celebrates how God set them free from being slaves in Egypt and united them as a people. Jewish people gather together on Passover to remember how God helped them, and to share bread and wine and other special foods.

Take a moment to read  below "Scripture Background: In the Time of Jesus" to see some of the special foods they eat during the Passover meal. When you are done take a look at the cover page of your "Together in Jesus" Lesson 4 and read the paragraph about "Jesus' Special Supper."

When you are done, think about what is missing at this supper. If you said the bread and wine, you are correct. Help to complete this supper preparation by finding the cup and bread sticker and placing it on the table in the correct spot. Then answer the questions below.
What do the bitter herbs at the Passover meal symbolize? *
At the Passover meal, the sacrifice at the first Passover is represented by the lamb? *
What does the egg symbolize? *
Check off below all the things the people are doing in the picture to help Jesus prepare for the special meal. *

JESUS EATS A SPECIAL SUPPER WITH HIS FRIENDS: In the Eucharistic Prayer at Mass, the priest leads the community in praying the story of Jesus' Last Supper. At this supper Jesus made bread and wine special signs of his wholehearted love for us. The next day he gave his life for us on the Cross.

Let's take a moment to turn to pages 2 and 3 in your "Together in Jesus" lesson. Take a look at the picture and locate Jesus. Then, can you name some of Jesus' followers who are gathered at the table with him?

If you said Peter, James, Judas, Matthew , Andrew, Phillip, and John, you are correct! Now work with your family to assign parts and to read through the story of the Last Supper. If no one is available, you can be creative and read all the parts yourself! When you are done, please answer the questions below.
What special feast did Jesus want to celebrate with his followers? *
Who did Jesus give thanks to when he picked up the bread? *
What did Jesus say the bread represented? *
What did Jesus say the wine represented? *
How long will God's love last? *
FANTASTIC JOB: So, what is so very special about the meal Jesus shared with his followers? If you said it is because Jesus tells his friends that the bread and wine are his Body and Blood and that they are to share this meal in memory of him, you are correct.

Every time you go to Mass, the change from bread and wine to the Body and Blood of Jesus occurs. Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist. This is what we do during every Eucharist that we celebrate at Mass. We gather to remember Jesus. The priest retells the story of Jesus' Last Supper and consecrates (blesses) our gifts of bread and wine, so that they become the Body and Blood of Christ. In this way, Jesus is really present with us. This is an incredible gift! We are blessed to be able to receive Jesus in the Eucharist.

Now take a couple of minutes to locate the additional documents for this lesson. Read again the story of "The Last Supper" and then complete and color in the maze, word search, shortened Last Supper story, and fill-in-the blank activities. Don't forget to color them in and to send me a picture of your completed work when you are done.
OUR COMMUNITY REMEMBERS JESUS AS HE ASKED US TO DO: Just as Jesus' followers prepared a meal, we also prepare a meal at every Mass. During the Liturgy of the Eucharist, we bring bread and wine to the altar and hand it to the priest so that he can consecrate (bless) both of them.

At Mass, we gather to listen to the story of Jesus at his Last Supper. We share in this special meal by listening and by receiving the Body and Blood of Christ. Jesus' body is a sign of life for us. When we share his Body, we are sharing in Jesus' life. Jesus poured out his Blood for us when he died. Each week at Mass, we share his Body and Blood in memory of Him.

Turn to page 4 and read what is said under each picture. You will see how what we do today at Mass is similar to what Jesus did at the Last Supper. Be sure to find your host and chalice stickers and place them in the appropriate spot. When you are done, go to the next section.
LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST:  Great job so far. Now, I want you to take some time to look at your Living Faith "Praying the Mass" booklet. Once you have located it, I want you to turn to page 10 through 15 in your "Praying the Mass " booklet. You will see under the "Liturgy of the Eucharist" section all of the prayers and responses that we say during that part of the Mass.

Read each part out loud.  The words in Bold print is what the congregation (people in church) say together.  Say them clearly and loudly.

Notice that first we prepare the gifts.  The bread and wine are brought up t the priest along with the collection.  Father says, "Pray, brethen that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father."  We all respond together:  "May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church."

Then we begin the Eucharistic Prayer.  We usually sing the Holy, Holy, Holy.

Father continues with the Eucharistic Prayer and completes the Consecration of the bread and wine.  This is when Father brings his hands from above his head and holds them over the bread and wine.  The Holy Spirit comes to change the bread and wine to the Body and Blood of Christ.  This is called Transubstantiation.

Then halfway through the Eucharistic Prayer, we have the Memorial Acclamation.  It can be a different acclamation depending on the time during the Church year.

Then at the end of the Eucharistic Prayer, Father says, "Through him, and with him, and in him, O God, almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor are yours, for ever and ever. Amen.

We stand and say the Our Father together.  Then we have the Sign of Peace.

Then we usually sing the Lamb of God.

Then we kneel and Father says the Communion prayer:  "Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb."

We all respond together:  "Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed."

Then we go up to receive Communion and return to our pew and pray.

Then answer the questions below please.
Put the following parts of the Liturgy of the Eucharist in the correct order (which part goes first).  Use the numbers to show which comes first, second, third, etc. *

FANTASTIC JOB: As you attend Mass, take some time to reflect and think about Jesus and the Last Supper. We are remembering the Last Supper when we celebrate the Eucharist. Once you have received your First Eucharist, you will begin to participate more fully in the life of the Church, which gathers to remember Jesus' Last Supper. Through this sacrament we share the Body and Blood of Christ and become Christ's Body in the world today - the Church.
SUPER GREAT JOB! You are continuing your sacramental prep journey and are doing a great job. I want you to remember that the Eucharist is the center of our lives!

The Sacrament of the Eucharist unites us with Jesus Christ and to one another.

Don't forget to place your Lesson 4 sticker on page 4 of your lesson to show that you have completed the work! We will continue to learn more about this celebration as we continue our lessons!
