Next year, I will be incorporating an essay writing unit to most classes: descriptive, persuasive and/or argumentative. For the 11/12 graders, I will also include college application essays for students who want to transition to Blinn or apply to other unversities.
CLASS DESCRIPTIONS:
8:15 Writing & Grammar (Grades 4-6) This class will help students grow confident in learning to write with structure and style in an accessible way. Students will learn to outline source texts and use their outlines to write paragraphs and simple essays. Weekly grammar review will be included.
11:00 Grades 9-11 Introduction to Literary Analysis Students enrolled in this class will be learning how authors use literary devices to develop plots, characters, and themes. They will read and study famous (and interesting) short stories in order to learn to annotate, analyze, and appreciate quality literature. The class includes a few literary analysis essays, an allusion project, and some group work and presentations.
12:00 Grades 7-8 Writing & Grammar This course seeks to challenge students to develop a mature and formal style of writing, with some creative writing mixed in; it will also include grammar lessons and quizzes covering more difficult and often-missed grammar rules. Students will embark on a novel study in the spring semester to introduce them to literary critiques.
1:00 Grades 11-12 Literature and Composition This English course will include reading, annotating, analyzing, discussing, and writing about American and British Literature. The reading list will be finalized in July, but some of the titles might include The Raven (Poe), Great Expectations (Dickens), The Grapes of Wrath (Steinbeck), The Old Man & the Sea (Hemingway) & The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (Stevenson).
