The Charlottetown Community Fridge is a volunteer-led food security project, aiming to provide more community members in the Charlottetown area with fresh food, on a first-come-first-serve, no registration, largely anonymous basis.
The Charlottetown Community Fridge is open 24/7 and operates on a no-barrier, mutual aid model, meaning:
- The goal is to meet the IMMEDIATE needs of our community -- getting food into people's hands (an "emergency" response, compared to provincial food banks and not-for-profits who focus on sustainability and long-term vision for food security)
- There's no hierarchy -- volunteers, fridge hosts, patrons who pick up food from the fridge, etc. -- we're all on equal ground and there's no financial or social goals other than feeding our community
- We prioritize autonomy -- patrons dropping off food or picking it up are fully responsible for their choice on what to leave or what to take. The hope is always to be fair, honest, and considerate, and we let patrons decide for themselves what that looks like.
