Required
All of these questions require a response. However, if you cannot answer the long form questions, or they are not applicable to you, please write NA or the like. With that being said, detailed answers would be very useful to my research, so if you wish to expand upon your answers in depth please feel free to!

On a scale from 1 to 10, with 1 being the least and 10 being the most, how much influence has consuming fantasy media* had on your understanding of political and historical themes/issues?*

*

* Media works includes: television, film, books, anime, video/online games. ‘Fantasy’ definition is quite general here as it includes science fantasy and dystopian genres that are not considered sci-fi (such as The Hunger Games).

* Themes and issues include, but are not limited to; war, genocide, environmentalism, anarchism, monarchism, facism, reparations, class struggle, and peace-building.

The following questions will be focusing on two Nickelodeon cartoons, “Avatar The Last Airbender” (ATLA), “The Legend of Korra” (LOK), and the wider ATLA media franchise.

If you have answered below 5 for the previous question, could you describe what has had a larger influence on your understanding of political and historical themes/issues?

*

On a scale from 1 to 10, how much do you think ATLA touched upon political/historical themes and issues?

*
On a scale from 1 to 10, how much do you think LOK touched upon political and historical themes/issues?
*

What political and historical themes/issues do you think ATLA and LOK presented?

*

On a scale from 1 to 10, how successful do you think ATLA was in presenting political and historical themes/issues?

*

On a scale from 1 to 10, how successful do you think LOK was in presenting political and historical themes/issues?

*

If you had watched either of the two shows as a child/teenager and again as an adult, has your perception on how political the shows were changed?

*

Could you elaborate on what has changed and why your perception has changed?

*

If you had watched either of the two shows as a child/teenager and again as an adult, has your perception on how successful the shows were in presenting political and historical themes/issues changed?

*

Could you elaborate on what has changed and why your perception has changed?

*

Did either of these two shows introduce you to any political and historical themes/issues?

*

Could you elaborate on what themes/issues it introduced you to?

*

On a scale of 1 to 10, has either of the two shows and the wider franchise had an impact* on your opinion of political and historical issues/themes?

*"impact" here is assessing the change in opinion. This could be a small change, a complete 180, consolidating pre-existing opinions, weakening pre-existing opinions, and introducing you to political and historical issues/themes.

*
If you have answered 5 or above for the previous question, could you expand upon the kind of impact the franchise has had on you and why you think this impact occurred. *
Have you engaged with the wider ATLA works outside of the cartoon shows, specifically the comics/graphic novels, the Kyoshi novels, and the Yangchen novels?
*

These works are noted to expand upon the politics of the Avatar world. If you answered yes to the previous question, would you agree with this sentiment?

*

In engaging with any of the works from the ATLA media franchise, did you get a sense of what kind of politics* the creators/writers adhere to?

*

* “Kind of politics” meaning political leanings and political affiliations. This is typically noticed from the main characters’ behaviour and attitudes, but can also be noticed from the larger ensemble cast, world building and plotlines.

Could you expand upon what kind of politics you sensed the creators/writers adhered to?

*
How did you come to this conclusion?
*
On a scale from 1 to 10, how much do you agree with the political and moral messaging of the franchise? *
If you'd like to expand upon your previous answer, such as why you disagree or agree, please do. *
Do you agree with the fans who believe politics should be kept out of discussions of the franchise? *
Why? *
There are some fans who believe that despite the franchise's progressiveness, it also adheres to conservative thinking (some fans have described this as "neoliberal"). Examples of fan criticism include: vilifying characters who have suffered under the Fire Nation's colonial violence like Jet and Hama, making anti-authority Toph create a police force, keeping the Fire Nation monarchy, and oversimplifying and vilifying leftist ideology (such as LOK's S3 depiction of anarchism through Zaheer and The Order of The Red Lotus). On a scale from 1 to 10, how far do you agree with these fans? *
Could you expand upon why you gave this score? *
Do you participate (passively* and/or actively) in fandom discussion regarding the political aspects of the ATLA media franchise?
*
*passively being actions such as reading/observing
