Please use this form to sign up for the Dachstein 2023 Expedition. Signing up here indicates that intend to attend. If you are subsequently unable to attend, or your plans change significantly, please let us know.

Please pay as soon as you can as can as we can't buy gear until we have money to do so, but please let us know if this is a problem for you.
We will send you an email to confirm your place and dates as soon as we are able.

The Dachstein expedition this year is being held from Sunday 13th August to Saturday 2nd September. If you have not been to the Dachstein before, there is/will be lots of information on our Facebook page:

This year, we can have a maximum of around 20 people at any one time. We have also been a quoted a price of €30 per use of the seilbahn, so it is very important to make sure we are not sending up half-loads. Therefore, we are encouraging all participants to attend one of the following periods of time:
1) The whole expedition (arriving Sun 13/8, departing Sat 2/9)
2) The first ten days (arriving Sun 13/8, departing Wed 23/8)
3) The last ten days (arriving Wed 23/8, departing Sat 2/9)
4) The first two weeks (arriving Sun 13/8, departing Sun 27/8)
5) The last two weeks (arriving Sat 19/8, departing Sat 2/9)

We will be staying in a caving hut in the valley in Obertraun on the nights of Sunday 13th August and Friday 1st September (this costs about €5 a night I think).

Exped fees (includes food, reasonable seilbahn use and expedition equipment):
£110/€125 for students/U25 £160/€180 for everyone else Accommodation: €11/night (paid to the hut in cash; €15/night in main hut if we run out of space) IMPORTANT: bring cash (in euros) to pay your hut fees and bar bill; by agreement with the Wiesberghaus we are making all payments in cash.

Arrival and Departure
Our expedition is based at the Wiesberghaus above Hallstatt which has a seilbahn (cable car) for bags only and is approximately a two to three hour walk up the mountain. There is a car park at the bottom of the seilbahn station where we can leave cars during the expedition.

We are hoping to book the local caving club in Obertraun (10-15 minutes drive from Hallstatt) for the nights at the start and end of the expedition (Sunday 13th August and Friday 1st September). This should make things easier for people travelling on public transport etc. (Obertraun has a train station) and we can arrange lifts to/from Hallstatt.

The seilbahn is now much more expensive than previous expeditions, and consequently we need to organize our arrivals and departures carefully to use fewer seilbahns. If you are arriving individually we can pay per bag, but please try and keep the number of bags down as it is still expensive...

You CANNOT sleep in your car in the car park; there is unfortunately no room for manoeuvre on this as it has caused a lot of problems in Hallstatt in recent years.
Also note that to actually get to the car park in Hallstatt often requires some determined repeating of 'Wiesberghaus' to convince the people who run the main car parks in Hallstatt to let you through the village... Please note that the parking arrangements have changed from previous years. The new car park is just below the old car park, which is gated off (although contact us if the car park is full) and the seilbahn now ends at the car park.
PS don't leave food in your vehicle at the bottom of the hill or the rodents will find it...

Caving insurance
You MUST have a suitable caving insurance policy which will cover search and rescue costs; this is expedition policy for anyone going caving on the Dachstein expedition. Standard BCA membership is NOT sufficient.
