2024 To The Moon Board Of Directors (BOD) Interest Form

So you're interested in joining To The Moon's Board Of Directors ....awesome! A functioning and diverse BOD is crucial to the success of our event. While Team Leads & Event Leads are in the trenches pulling the actual event off, the BOD is responsible for shepherding the business side throughout the year and taking care of behind the scenes details so To The Moon will last for years to come. As such, it's a different role with different skill sets needed. Serving on the board is a year-round commitment; the good news is you have time to play during the burn as your work is already done!

Some of the things the board handles include but are not limited to: strategic planning, local officials and governmental outreach, financial planning and management, legal compliance, budgeting, Event Leads selection, securing the land / negotiating contract with landowners as well as contracting for critical paid staff such as medics and security personnel, obtaining event insurance, obtaining legal status of the company behind the event and other unglamorous but utterly crucial areas of emphasis.

We heavily prefer applicants with a background and skillset that enables them to competently help manage some if not all of these matters. Burners who want to volunteer their skills to the burn and which are accountants or financial analysts, PR consultants, lawyers, administrators, or other professional fields often find that the board is where they can make the greatest potential contribution.

Don't let that intimidate you, as you don't have to handle it alone; as an ongoing event To The Moon has much of this in place, and as a small event we've found that smart people with common sense can usually find a way to make things happen.

Below are some expectations and requirements to sit on our Board of Directors. Do not be scared by all this stuff! We have pretty solid support and resource systems to help you with this, especially if this is your first time on a non-profit board.

GENERAL LEADERSHIP EXPECTATIONS:
Attend board meetings via Zoom or other conferencing app
Be aware of the fact that many board issues require confidentiality and practice good information security practices - you will be asked to sign an NDA
Be cordial and professional with other members of leadership. We’re a small team with a LOT to do; you don’t have to like everyone, but you do need to be a team player. This is a volunteer role, but professionalism is important to get the job done.
Complete action items in a timely fashion. Communicate with other board members or members of event leadership as needed.
Be willing to learn and follow board and general governance guidelines.
Be able to commit at least 5 hours per week to board issues (less in the June-October 'offseason', potentially a bit more at times in the month or two prior to the event.)
Attend On-Site Safety/Radio training.
Be willing to acquire the tools necessary for the job (or already have them) such as smartphone, computer, ability to use Google Drive etc.
