INTRODUCTION
PRACTICUM REQUIREMENTS
The Intern Academy Program with Appalachian Counseling Center is meant to be a comprehensive program that not only helps you meet your student requirements for your practicum and internship course but equips you with basic counseling skills, practical practice-management exposure, knowledge of an Electronic Medical Record (Simple Practice) and training with known evidence-based practices. Our program requirements go above and beyond what your schools will ask of you, and there are three reasons for this approach.
  • Your clients may have complex needs and ethically we want to provide you with extra supervision and training you will need to provide good care.
  • Systemically, new clinicians have little practical training and experience in using evidenced-based modalities to care for clients.
  • New clinicians have little practical knowledge of intakes, diagnosing, treatment planning, and progress notes which are vital to success in this profession.

The following are core requirements of Appalachian counseling Center’s Intern Academy Program. These requirements are not subject to change due to student availability. Failure to comply with these requirements may result in dismissal from the program.

Please read each requirement carefully and initial your agreement before continuing with the application.

PRACTICUM STUDENT ORIENTATION

Intern orientation is an 8-hour daylong event or two (2) 4-hour events, 1 month prior to your semester starting. This will set you up for success as a participant in the program. This is designed as a one or two-time training for incoming interns and only completed once. This training includes but is not limited to obtaining a secure email, writing your professional disclosure, accessing Appalachian Counseling Center’s Electronic Medical Records (EMR), basic note-taking with a role-playing client, an Appalachian Counseling Center policy review, safety planning, office staff introductions, other on-boarding tasks, etc.

*
INTERNSHIP STUDENT PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TRAINING

Internship Student Practice Management Training is a 4-hour training event (1 month prior to the start of your internship) that will look at basic dynamics related to practice management including licensure, insurance billing & credentialing, diagnosing and the golden thread of notetaking.

*
SUPERVISION

Supervision is mandatory and will be a minimum of 2 hours long on Thursdays from 10 am to 12 noon. This does not change due to student availability or your academic program supervision standard. Why? You will have no simple clients and each client will require that you come ready to give your best efforts.

*
HOURS FOR COUNSELING

All your practicum and internship hours will need to be accomplished within the hours of 8 am – 6 pm, Monday – Thursday and 8 am – 3 pm on Fridays. Evening and/or weekend counseling opportunities for interns are extremely limited.

*
MODALITY TRAINING

Modality training is mandatory and will occur throughout each term and average out to be 1-2 hours a week. Sometimes this training will stand alone and sometimes it may be added onto or a part of your supervision. This training will include as a minimum: Solution Focused Brief Therapy, person-centered therapy techniques, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy approaches.

*
PROGRAM FEES

You're required to pay a $100 fee for the 1st semester/quarter. Subsequent semesters will include a paid internship for income-generating sessions. This fee covers a background check and access to a HIPAA-compliant platform.

*Graduate students only

*
CO-THERAPY

All interns will be doing their counseling as part of a co-therapy team working with Appalachian Counseling Center clinicians or other interns. This is purposely done to maximize your available counseling hours and to allow for ongoing transition of care for clients being seen by interns.

I have read and agree to this requirement (initial).

*
ADDITIONAL INTERN SITE
I understand and agree that an additional intern site must be coordinated with the Appalachian Counseling Center Intern Academy Program Director before adding an additional site. I understand and agree that failure to disclose an additional site may result in my dismissal from the program.
