The Blue Mountain Eagle Climbing Club presents TREK-SYLVANIA BACKPACKING
ESSENTIALS: Skills Workshops Covering the Basics of Backpacking. You
will leave this event with the confidence and knowledge to safely take
on a backpacking trip. No hiking gear or previous knowledge required.
Come join us for a full day that will cover the gear, skills and recommended
practices that will get you started. We’ll have a variety of different
equipment to see and try so that you can make choices that fit your
needs and budget. Learn how to plan, navigate, pack, cook and set up
camp. Session instructors include three AT through-hikers, section
hikers, Scout leaders and experienced backpackers. _________
Planned sessions include:
- Backpacks
- Clothing, Footwear and Accessories
- Leave No Trace
- Hygiene and First Aid
- Kitchen and Food Storage
- Navigation
- Water Treatment
- Shelters, Tents, Hammocks and Sleep Systems
- Trek Planning
- Backpacking with children
The sessions will follow a predetermined schedule in small groups, where
you can meet like minded people and learn in a personal setting.

Any prior hiking or backpacking experience is not required and you do not
need to own any gear. All you need to bring is yourself, a good
attitude, sturdy shoes, and a water bottle.
By the end of this day, you’ll learn:
- What gear options are available to you
- What to expect on an overnight backpacking trip
- What to bring on a backpacking overnight
- How to pack a backpack
- How to prep and set up a camp
- How to plan your next backpacking excursion
- How to survive a single night in the woods (whether you’re hiking 1 mile or 20!)
- The experiences and stories of many seasoned hikers and backpackers
