There will be two different stations: Registration and cheek swap.
Registration: The helpers who sit at the laptops essentially have a “monitoring task”. The donors enter their data into the PC themselves and the helpers sit next to them and check whether everything is done correctly. If the health card is available, the helping person inserts it into the card reader. This means that your name, address, date of birth and gender are automatically adopted. The registrant then only needs to enter their telephone number and email address. The signature is made on an electronic pad. The donor card is also signed at this station, which is communicated by the helpers.
Cheek swaps: The cheek swabs are carried out by the donors themselves. The helpers instruct the donors to do this and simply hold the packaging in their hands. You are also welcome to wear disposable gloves, although this is not really necessary. The swabs are put back into the packaging by the donors themselves. The helpers monitor the duration of the smear, which must be long enough (at least 30 seconds; we have small hourglasses for that :) ) so that enough material is collected to determine the HLA characteristics in the laboratory. The helpers have to be extremely careful to ensure that there are no mix-ups between the swabs.
The AKB team thoroughly instructs all helpers in the tasks before the shifts. Also, in case of questions during your shift, there will always be someone from AKB to help.
