Once upon a time, a husband and wife lived together in an isolated area a mile from the city. The husband had to work nights. Each evening, he left his wife and took the bus to work. In the morning, he took the bus home.
The wife was not happy about this. Restless and lonely, she would take the next bus into town each evening where she would secretly work at part-time jobs. They needed the money, but she knew her husband would not be pleased about this. To keep her jobs secret, she always made sure to return home before he got off work. Whenever she was pressured to work additional hours, she would quit and find a new job.
One night, she decided to quit her job and had a horrible fight with her boss, a man we’ll call Boss 1. She started back to the bus stop and suddenly realized she didn’t have enough money for bus fare. Swallowing her pride, she returned to Boss 1’s store to borrow money. He was still angry and slammed the door in her face. Then she remembered that a former boss, Boss 2, was in a shop only a block away. She went to him, but Boss 2 was still angry about her quitting. He also refused to give her money.
Now the woman was starting to get desperate. She rushed to the bus stop and asked the bus driver if she could ride free. The driver explained that he would get in trouble if he let her ride free and pulled away without her.
It would soon be morning, and her husband would be returning from work. The woman decided to walk home, even though the route took her through the most dangerous part of town. On the way, a young man tried to rob her. She told him she had no money. When he tried to grab her purse, they fought. The man stabbed the woman, and she died.
