Young people have suffered greatly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Social isolation from friends, students and colleagues, limited access to online education, and other forms of social exclusion have led to serious mental health threats. In addition, career perspectives are dire. Smooth transitions to work have been (in some cases permanently) hampered, and the (re)integration of the young into the labour market will be a major challenge.

On the occasion the European Youth Event 2021 (#EYE2021), CESI Youth aims at bringing the interest of its young members in particular, and of youth in general  into the spotlight. Why does the Recovery and Resilience Facility, the EU’s main response to the devastating economic impacts of the pandemic, not specifically address the needs of the young? What could be done at national level to provide sufficient investments in the Child Guarantee and Youth Guarantee? Which type of action at which level can address the most pressing issues for young people in the aftermath of the pandemic as part of the recovery policies?

During the two-hour panel, CESI Youth wishes to collect and formulate clear recommendations for EU and national stakeholders on how to revert the worrying youth unemployment trends, on how to provide more investments in the education-to-work transitions, on how to address the negative mental health threats, and on how to extend social protection baskets to more young people.

‘Bringing Youth Back on Track’ is the only way EU’s future can be guaranteed! EU must take better care of its next generation.
