Time commitment: 2-5 hours per month
Description: Consultants can provide feedback to writers online and/or in person (it’s up to the volunteer!). We let writers know our volunteers are generalists, which means consultants should be comfortable reading and giving feedback on a wide variety of writing genres, such as fiction, memoir, cover letters, poems, and essays. YpsiWrites provides a consultant manual with helpful guidance and resources.
Requirements:
- All consultants should establish rapport, show respect, and be supportive of community writers.
- All consultants must attend a virtual 1-hour training session before their first consultation.
- In-person consultants must be available at a Writers Room session, which occurs monthly at the Ypsilanti District Library.
- Virtual consultants must be comfortable with using Google Sheets, email, Google Docs or Word, and PDF files. This is how community members submit their writing to us.
- For virtual consultations, feedback must be returned to the writer within one week of submission. Most submissions are between 2 and 10 pages in length.
