OIAF Toon Apprentice Day: BIT VR Workshops Sign-Up Form
In this workshop, we aim to give a step by step overview on how to create a simple Virtual Reality (VR) program with Unity3D game engine. By the end of the workshop, students will know how to use the Oculus CV1 VR platform and the Leap Motion sensor to build simple interactive VR experiences using Unity.

The instructor will thoroughly explain the steps necessary in creating a VR application in Unity and adding different interactive components to the project. Students will then have the chance to test their newly acquired knowledge by building a small VR application with the help of the instructor and try the VR software they made. Workshop sessions last about 30 minutes each. Students will be divided up into groups of 5, with each group using one of the three available stations for VR development.

Each session will begin with how to set up Unity project settings for VR/XR development. Next, students will learn how to create a basic Unity Scene for running VR applications by adding the VR camera rig prefab and other required components to the scene. After this initial step, the instructor will show students how to add interactive elements to the VR program and demonstrate two or three different interaction techniques commonly used in VR applications. Students will learn how to add and set up the Oculus controllers to manipulate and interact with virtual objects. They will learn about raycasting interaction technique, how this interaction model works, and it’s limitations. Lastly, students will learn how to set up and use the Leap Motion sensor for hand/finger tracking for direct virtual object interaction in Virtual Environments.
