The Human Library is an event that seeks to celebrate the diversity present on the McMaster campus, shine light on prejudices, and break down stereotypes.

A Human Library is an event where 'Human Books' (which register through this application) volunteer to share their stories and experiences with other people in the McMaster community (coined 'Readers') through in-depth conversation and discussion (approximately 20 minutes). Our Human Library provides a safe, non-judgmental and confidential space. These personal conversations will remain intimate, either 1-on-1 or in small groups. We will also set clear regulations to ensure the safety of all participants.

We believe that everyone has a story to tell, and it becomes difficult to know what other people experience in the world without communication. Through conversations, we take steps towards a world that fosters compassion and understanding, and shine light on stories and experiences that can shift perspectives and encourage education.
Why should I register to be a Human Book?
The Human Library is an opportunity for groups to provide presence to an identity, tackle misunderstandings, inspire each other, and bring attention to prejudices and stereotypes in our community.

Human Books are what make the Human Library, “Human”. Without their willingness to be generous with their time, and to impact human minds for the better, this initiative wouldn’t have the international recognition that it has garnered over the years. Volunteering at this event means that human books can raise awareness, dispel myths, exchange knowledge, dialogue, share experiences, or provide emotional and moral strength to other community members.
Who can be a Human Book?
We believe that anyone can be a Human Book, as we all have stories to share. As this event is held on McMaster campus, we are specifically looking for current McMaster students or alumni. The Human Library taking place on February 12th, 2020 is themed around experiences from oppressed, prejudiced, discriminated, stigmatized, stereotyped and/or marginalized groups.

Our last Human Library, held in February 2020, hosted Human Books that shared experiences involving, but not limited to, self-image, abuse, mental health, and race.

It is NOT required that Human Books must directly fall into these groups. Some individuals feel as though their stories cannot be well-defined by a group. Additionally, many of us also witness the personal experiences of others. For instance, you could be the child of a first generation immigrant parent. These experiences can have taken place anywhere, within or outside Canada.

You are welcome to discuss any and all of the experiences you have faced.

Here are some book titles from other groups: http://humanlibrary.org/meet-our-human-books/
When and where will the Human Library take place?
The Human Library takes place at JHE in room 326H from 2:30pm-5:30pm.
Here's what our last Human Library (February 2020) looked like!
