Please start by asking your child: "Who knows the name of the special meal that Jesus shared with his friends?" (Last Supper) Explain that this happened on Thursday of Holy Week. *
Next ask your child: "How do we remember Jesus' Last Supper every Sunday?" (Mass, Holy Communion, Eucharist) Read aloud these words from Eucharistic Prayer IV: "While they were at supper, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to his disciples. . . Taking the chalice,. . . he gave thanks and gave the chalice to his disciples." Then ask your child: "What did Jesus do before he shared the bread and wine with his friends?" (Blessed it, thanked God for it, prayed) *
Next ask your child: "What do you do before a big meal?" (Say a prayer to thank God for it) Help your child find page 30 in their What the Church Believes and Teaches handbook and locate the Blessings Before Meals. Help your child learn the prayer by saying one line and inviting them to repeat that line after you. *
Return to the events of the Last Supper. Ask: "What special words did Jesus say after he thanked God for the bread and wine?" (Take this, all of you, and eat of it, for this is my body. . . Take this, all of you, and drink from it, for this is the chalice of my Blood." Explain that at Mass, the bread and wine become Jesus' Body and Blood just like at the Last Supper on Holy Thursday. *
