We offer Interpretation & Outreach in a variety of formats!

Your-site (not at the park)
We come to you!

Thanks to our new Mobile Visitor Center, we can bring the park right to you. While we cannot come to private homes, we can come to: other parks, fire halls, community centers, schools, etc. 

Programs within a 30 minute commute of Owings Mills Md will have the best chance of being accommodated. Other parks nearby include- Gunpowder Falls State Park, Cunningham Falls State Park, Seneca Creek State Park, Sandy Point State Park. 

Outdoor Programs are not available in temperatures less than 50 degrees or otherwise inclement. 

What we can offer off site:

Mobile Visitor Center- Basic Display - up to 4 hours ($20/hr on site, $40/hr off site). 
Setup of our Mobile Visitor Center with various activities to introduce visitors to the park in their backyard including:
    -Leave No Trace Ethics- what it is and what it means to you
    -Scat & Tracks     
    -Nature Journaling
   
    -Tree ID

Scales & Tales - Basic Display - up to 4 hours ($125 per hour)
Staff will bring up to 3 reptiles to your event. This is not a presentation, rather a tabling display, perfect for informal, walk-by style events such as a county fair. Specific animals may be requested, but not guaranteed. Please specify in your request any preferences. **Not available November - March for outdoor events, temperatures must be above 60*F. 

Owl Pellet Dissection  (on site- $45 per session, approximately 45 minutes.)
For up to 15 people at a time. 30 kids for $75, off site- $70/$100)  
We provide the supplies and pellets! We will lead your wildlife biologists in a study of what is an owl pellet, what has this bird been eating, what does this bird eat in the wild, and how do we think pellets would vary by location and season.

Junior Rangers 
We bring the popular junior ranger program to your school!  $35/kid. Five 90 minute sessions, culminating with taking the Junior Ranger pledge and completing a service project in the school or as a field trip in the park. Ages 7-14. Up to 24 kids at a time. Topics covered include- parks and park rangers, planet earth, plants and animals, people, and conservation. With activities like using a compass, and birdwatching.

Park Pals ($35 per kid)
We bring the popular Park Pals program to your school! Five 90 minute sessions, culminating with taking the Park Pals pledge and completing a service project in the school or as a field trip in the park. Ages 4-6. Size is limited to 12 kids at a time. Topics covered include- parks and park rangers, planet earth, plants and animals, people, and conservation. With activities like setting up a tent, catching bugs, creating animal tracks, what to do if you get lost in the woods.

BioBlitz - 2 hr event, $100. 
Staff will bring a variety of supplies to study the natural area around you! Find and identify plant and animal species using field guides, digital guides, nets, binoculars, and more. Learn what the diversity of species means in relation to the health of your environment.

Reptile Wrap-Up.
This program will not be done if temperatures outside are less than 60 degrees.

The scaly creatures will captivate you as we share myths, histories, and benefits of these often misunderstood animals in a presentation-style program.

Available at areas of Patapsco Valley State Park

Open Hilton Area Nature Center
$20 per hour, up to 4 hour
Planning on having a birthday party in the Hilton Area and want to add a little extra? Request the Nature Center to be open out of season. Learn about the native flora and fauna of the area and participate in a few fun activities! *Please note the Nature Center does not have heating for the winter or cool days*

Open Avalon Area's William Offutt Johnson History Center
$20 per hour, up to 4 hours
Take a self-guided or properly guided tour around the newly renovated William Offutt Johnson History Center in the Avalon Area of Patapsco Valley State Park! Learn about the Patapsco River Valley industry and it's history shaped by catastrophic flooding. 

Ranger Roundup
45 minutes-for groups 5-30 people-  $15
What is a park ranger?  Learn about various jobs in natural resources and in the Maryland Park Service, how to get a job with MPS and how to start skill-building now. Try on the various hats/uniforms and tackle ranger tasks. Great for scout and 4h groups.  Requires rental of a Picnic Shelter or Youth Group Campsite.

Canoeing - Daniels Area
2 hours. For groups of 6-15 people. $10/person.
*Air and water temperature combined must be greater than 120. All participants must wear a life jacket. Great for birthday parties! Staff will take participants out on a gentle paddle along the Patapsco river, pointing out the various plant and animal species along the way. *Program is not offered until further notice*  

Fishing - McKeldin Area
2 hours. For groups of 6-15 people. $5/person.
All participants over 16 must have a non-tidal fishing license. Air and water temperature combined must be greater than 120. Staff will teach participants the basics of fishing and share the inside story on best fishing in the park, responsible fishing practices, and how to identify your fish. Great for birthday parties!

Owl Prowl
1 hour. For groups of 6- 15 people. $2/person.
An evening hike to see and hear the various owls, and other night life, that are active at night. Great for those camping in our youth group areas.  Requires rental of Youth Group Campsite. Not available during owl nesting seasons.

Available at Soldiers Delight NEA

Serpentine Ecosystem Restoration
For groups 5-15. $75
A natural history tour of Soldiers Delight Natural Environment Area. Focus includes the evolution of the barrens from colonization to present day, culture perceptions of the area and their impact on land use and subsequent preservation efforts. Can be adapted to include an outdoor hike or an indoor presentation. This program is great for ages 14+ 

Owl Prowl
For groups of 5-15 people $2/person.
An evening hike to see and hear the various owls, and other night life, that are active at night. Not available during owl nesting seasons. 

Feeding Frenzy
For groups 5-15 people. $3/person.
Behind the scenes look at the morning feedings of our turtles and snakes. Staff will explain the various dietary needs of the animals in our care and how we feed them here to mimic their needs in the wild, and observe their natural behaviors.


Virtual Programs 
Now you can enjoy our animal programs from the comfort of your school! The following programs are now available Live over Google meets. All programs are 45 minutes regardless of the size of the viewing party and the cost is $45.

Wings & Things
Prepare for an in-depth look at raptors and other birds as we explore their natural history, conservation topics, and tell the "tales" of how each was brought into our care. Watch a bird in flight, see how they eat and how they are custom built for their role in the natural world.

Unsung Heroes
Reptiles and birds demonstrate how we often judge an animal's value by the way it looks. Learn that all wildlife serves a purpose in nature from snakes to vultures, with an emphasis on the food web and natural life cycles. Viewers will get to learn about the cool, the gross and the little known facts of these critters.

 Not So Ninja Turtles
We will share myths, histories and benefits of these often misunderstood animals. What is involved in their care and how is that mimicked in the wild? What turtles can you find in your own backyards

Animal Sounds
Children explore animal sounds and colors and how they use these in the wild. Can your children mimic these animals? Recommended for younger children.

Scales & Tall Tales
Staff will read stories related to the wildlife in our program- from fables and folk lore to the reasons behind our superstitions. How does storytelling impact how we view these animals? Staff will also share the real story of how these animals came to be in our care and how humans have impacted them.
