INTRODUCTION

This unique annual event by Ecotourism & Conservation Society Malaysia (ECOMY) marks the arrival of the migrating Plain-pouched Hornbills (Aceros subruficollis) from their breeding grounds in Thailand into Royal Belum & Tasik Temenggor, Perak, Malaysia. Numbers of birds sighted in previous years range between 100 to over 3,261 birds in one count!

There are 10 species of hornbills in Malaysia and all 10 can be found in Royal Belum and the Temenggor Lake. All data collected by this expedition will be used as part of a local action plan and strategy to help the management of the park and to promote ecotourism as a sustainable activity for the area The Royal Belum State Park is a large park in the northern parts of Peninsular Malaysia. It is part of the even bigger Belum- Temenggor Forest Complex (BTFC) that is shared with Thailand and covers an area of about 117,500ha of primary rainforest.

In promoting ecotourism & sustainable travel, ECOMY believes that this expedition is a good avenue to document and estimate Hornbill sightings & population in the area. We also hope to collect data on the distribution and movement of hornbills of the area in a fun and marketable event plus it will provide income for the local communities and unique training opportunity for local guides.

OBJECTIVES
To survey, document and promote Royal Belum State Park as one of Malaysia’s unique birdwatching and ecotourism destination.
