Improving cycling and horse riding along The Ridgeway
Only part of The Ridgeway is legally open to cyclists and horse riders, in contrast to walkers who can enjoy the full length of the Trail. The Ridgeway Partnership are seeking views and ideas on how we can better cater for cyclists and horse riders. (Note that we will not contemplate creating a tarmac trail or similar to suit road bicycles.)

Lots of people could benefit from better cycling routes. The photo shows cyclists involved in a Ridgeway event near Didcot in 2019, raising money for local charities (Uptonogood event).

Did you know there is not a public legal right to ride a bicycle or horse on a public footpath?
It is trespass to ride on a public footpath unless you have landowner permission. Cyclists and horse riders can ride along a 'bridleway', 'restricted byway' and 'byway open to all traffic' without landowner permission because there is a public right to ride on these routes.
