Duke administration has neglected to address a public health crisis facing over half of Duke students: the attack on abortion access and reproductive autonomy across the country. 

Rolling back access to safe, legal abortions and contraceptives is a direct attack on people who are capable of pregnancy. 

In North Carolina, the state legislature is predominantly anti-choice. Republicans failed to gain a supermajority in the legislature in November’s election, but there are multiple anti-choice Democrats in the legislature. These few votes could help Republicans override Governor Cooper’s veto on anti-choice legislation.

Duke is one of the largest employers in North Carolina. Releasing a statement in support of reproductive rights would put pressure on the North Carolina state legislature to protect not only Duke students, but people who are capable of pregnancy all across the state.
