Westlake Charter School's GATE Program
The goal of the Westlake Charter School’s GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) Program is to provide differentiated learning opportunities during the regular school day for our students. Differentiation is an effective approach to teaching and learning. It provides flexibility in the core curriculum so that students may learn at their own ability levels and at their own pace.  Promoting academic excellence, perseverance, student responsibility and joyful learning are key components of our program.

If a student is a GATE identified student, he/she is placed in a GATE cluster classroom for the following school year.  This is a research-based program in which GATE-identified students (generally 2-6 students in primary grades; 2-8 students in upper grades) are grouped together within the mixed-ability classroom.  Teachers provide differentiated instruction to meet the unique needs of these students. Differentiated instruction for students/advanced learners may include, but is not limited to, flexible grouping, acceleration, in-depth study, complexity, and novelty. This may occur daily or periodically throughout the year. Differentiated activities are conducted as an integrated part of the regular program. Supplemental materials and technology may also be used to enhance the basic curriculum.
GATE Identification
Student's GATE identification is based on evaluation of the following areas:

NNAT3 percentile score (96%ile and above)
MAP/NWEA & CAASPP
Additional information as needed
Referral Procedures
All 2nd grade students will test during the school day.  Either a parent or teacher can recommend a 3rd- 8th grade student to be eligible for GATE.*  To participate, both the teacher and parent must complete a feedback form.  Both forms must be completed by 4:00pm on Friday, January 31st, 2020.  Only 3rd-8th grade students with completed referrals by this time will be tested.  A permission slip will be sent home to take the NNAT3 assessment after school the week of March 9th.  This is a nonverbal measure of general intellectual ability that yields a norm-based score.  The Student Support Services team will review the qualifying assessment data gathered through the referral process. Results will be sent home to families of all students who are referred in June 2020.

*If a student has been previously identified for GATE, they do not need to go through the process again.
