World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (18 – 24 Nov 2021)
📣 In the light of the World Antimicrobial Awareness Week, we would like to take our part in raising awareness of this ever-growing problem by presenting you with three outstanding lectures. You will get an opportunity to hear about the evolution of resistance to antibiotics, the appearance of multiresistant bacteria in Serbia, different mechanisms of biofilm formation and their application in drug development, as well as what links antimicrobial resistance to COVID-19. Each of these topics will be covered by these extraordinary lecturers.

🔬Dr Gwen Knight is working at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine on exploring the dynamics of antimicrobial resistance using mathematical modelling. She is currently involved in the CMMID (Centre for Mathematical Modelling of Infectious Diseases) COVID-19 response. Her previous research involved modelling the dynamics of the disease tuberculosis and the impact of a range of different control measures from new drug regimens to vaccines.

👨‍🔬 Dr Lori Burrows is the Interim Director of McMaster University’s Michael G. DeGroote Institute for Infectious Diseases Research. She is a microbiologist and an international expert on the structure, function and regulation of type IV pili. Apart from the research of the type IV pili, her lab is also investigating how biofilms develop in response to chemical cues, particularly antibiotics.

🔎 Dr Branko Jovčić is a professor at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Faculty of Biology, University of Belgrade and vice-head of the Laboratory for Molecular Microbiology at the Institute of Molecular Genetics and Genetic Engineering. His research interests include molecular microbiology, molecular mechanisms of resistance to antibiotics, molecular mechanisms of bacteria-host interaction and medical microbiology.
