Time Commitment

The fellowship will last for 8 evenings. Leading up to each session, fellows will be given some reading and exercises to do during the week. Roughly how much time are you willing to spend on the fellowship?

What is important in your life? Why do you have those values? (~150 words)

We aren't looking for the correctness of your responses.

Written Response 1

You’ll now be introduced to some core ideas of effective altruism through a reading and a video. When we ask you to write up your thoughts, please know that there are no right or wrong answers; we’re simply looking to see how you engage with and think critically about new ideas, as this will be an important part of the fellowship.

For this first short written response, please read this article http://mindingourway.com/on-caring/ and then write up a few thoughts you have on it in the box below (we’re expecting you to spend around 10 mins reading, and then a further 10 mins writing).

To help, here are a few prompts you may respond to:

- Do you feel we’re faced with a great opportunity, or a terrible tragedy?
- How do you feel about the later point on prioritizing our actions based on cost-effectiveness, such that we’ll probably not get round to saving these birds?
- How do you think we should balance between emotional judgements and making calculations to determine how we can best do good?
- What do you make of this idea of impartiality (helping people/sentient beings equally regardless of how “connected” or geographically close you are)?
- Are you surprised by any of your responses to the above? (i.e., do you think you might have answered differently before reading the article?)

(Note: You do not need to respond to all these prompts. We’re keen to read your thoughts, but please don’t spend more than about 10 mins writing this. Moreover, we’re not assessing you on presentation or writing style, so feel free to use prose, bullet points, or anything else. You’re also welcome to copy-paste prompts and write your answers underneath.)
*
Written Response 2

In this second written response, please watch this TED talk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyprXhvGVYk and then write up your thoughts on it in the box below (the video is 12 mins long and, again, we’re expecting you to spend a further ~10 mins on writing).

Here are some prompts you may respond to:

- Three “cause areas” are mentioned — global health, factory farming, and existential risks. Can you think of any other global problems which might score highly in the importance, tractability, neglectedness framework?
- How do you feel about MacAskill’s focus on existential risks? How might you weigh up devoting resources to safeguarding humanity’s future versus helping people (and animals) today?
- Caring about existential risks relies in part on caring about future, yet-to-be-born people. To what extent do you agree with giving future people “moral value”?

(Again, you do not need to respond to all of these. We’re keen to read your thoughts, but please don’t spend much more than 10 mins on this.)
