Belton Middle School Jazz Band Audition Sign-Up
This performing ensemble is a separate class that must be taken concurrently with Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Intermediate Orchestra, or Advanced Orchestra. You must use 2 electives in order to participate in Jazz Band.

Jazz Band is a unique musical ensemble that is very different from a typical concert band setting. There are different challenges, lessons, and experiences. One difference is the instruments that make up a jazz band.  Jazz bands are limited to these instruments:

--Alto, Tenor, & Baritone Saxophones
--Trumpet
--Trombone
--Rhythm Section, consisting of drum set, vibraphone (vibes), electric guitar, bass guitar or upright bass, and piano

The size of the ensemble is affected by this instrumentation. Our typical concert band can range in size from 40-60 people, yet jazz bands will typically range from 15-25 students. Auditions are required of all instruments, and the End-of-Year (EOY) Audition will serve as the placement exam for Jazz Band. No additional scales, music, or sightreading is required to audition.

Some instruments will have different requirements than a typical concert band setting. Students who play drum set are required to take private lessons from a qualified percussionist that can be recommended by a band director. Guitar players must be able to read regular music notation, not just tablature (tabs).

The Belton Middle School Jazz Band is part of an enrichment curriculum to regular concert band or orchestra, and is a supplement to these music classes. If there is an instrument that someone plays and they are not in Band, then they need to speak with Mr. Pulley to determine if they meet the qualifications.
