Community outreach – Benefits and Pitfalls
Community outreach refers to the act of serving communities with unmet needs. The communities could be local or global, and their needs could be overarching (e.g., public health improvements) or specific (e.g., audiology services). Additionally, the needs of communities can be temporal in nature ranging from acute (e.g., post-hurricane rehabilitation) to chronic (e.g., building healthcare infrastructure for an entire country). With increased awareness about global audiological needs, audiologists must carefully scrutinize the impact of their actions on the communities they serve. This student-led debate - relevant to the National Public Health Week 2024 theme of ‘Protecting, Connecting and Thriving’ - will explore both the benefits and pitfalls of community outreach.
