54th Annual Chicano Commencement at SJSU-Student Registration Form
Dear Spartan,

You are invited to participate in the 54th Annual Chicano Commencement Celebration at SJSU. This in-person celebration recognizes and celebrates the scholastic accomplishments of our Latinx/a/o students while also celebrating and honoring individuals in your support system including familia, friends, professors, and mentors that have accompanied you on this journey.

**Only students who have applied to graduate (an application on file with the Registrar's Office) for Spring/Summer 2024 and students who graduated Fall 2023, are eligible to participate.**

The first Chicano Commencement at SJSU took place in 1971 and was born out of student protest.  The lack of Chicano student enrollment, faculty representation, and programs at SJSU during this time is what led a group of Chicano students to walk out of their SJSU commencement ceremony when less than 1% of the graduating class were Chicanos. 53 years later, the legacy of Chicano Commencement informs the practices SJSU engages in to increase the number of Chicanx/a/o and Latinx/a/o students enrolling at SJSU, increase and strengthen the number of culturally-relevant holistic support services,  and identify better ways to recognize, honor, and celebrate Chicanx/a/o and Latinx/a/o student success. To learn more about this critical history, you can watch the recording of the 2019 Revisiting the 1968 Chicano Commencement Symposium: https://blogs.sjsu.edu/newsroom/2019/sjsu-to-host-revisiting-the-1968-chicano-commencement-symposium-oct-11/

Please submit this form to sign-up to participate in Chicano Commencement by the priority registration deadline of April 19th.

We have limited FREE cultural stoles. Although we can't guarantee a stole for everyone who registers by April 19, the sooner you submit this form, the better chance you have of securing a stole. We will email you within 72 hours of submitting the form to confirm whether we are able to provide you with a stole.  Stoles will only be given to students who physically attend Chicano Commencement on May 21. If you register and do not attend Chicano Commencement, you forfeit the stole.  Stoles will be handed out the morning of Chicano Commencement. Registering by the priority deadline will ensure that your name is included in the printed program.

Students may continue to register past the priority registration date through May 17. Cultural stoles may or may not be available at this point in time and your name would not be included in the printed program.
