The Sherwood Police Department will be conducting a Citizens’ Police Academy beginning October 3, 2023. This will be a four-week academy designed to inform citizens on different aspects of law enforcement including Community Policing, Patrol Duties, Criminal Investigations, Traffic Enforcement, Tactical Training, Court Procedures, and Firearms Safety. The course will be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The course is free, and we encourage all who want to gain an active knowledge of their police department to attend. Attendance will be limited to Sherwood residents, property owners or business owners that are at least 21 years old, and with no criminal record.
The purpose of the Citizens’ Police Academy is to develop positive relations between the police and the community through education. The goal is to create a growing number of responsible, well-informed citizens that are educated about police practices and services. Citizens will gain an appreciation of the problems and challenges facing law enforcement. Citizens will also have an opportunity to offer comments, opinions, and ideas regarding solutions to policing in the 21st Century. The instructors of the Citizens’ Police Academy will include officers and personnel from the Sherwood Police Department. The instructors will speak on their areas of expertise. The Citizens’ Police Academy is coordinated through the Sherwood Police Department’s Office of Professional Standards.
