1. Will there be UVU choirs in the fall? Do I still sign-up for an audition in August? Will singing beautiful harmonies together in-person be possible this academic year?
Yes, yes, and yes!
All four UVU choirs (UVU Chamber Choir, UVU Women’s Choir, UVU Men’s Choir, UVU Concert
Choir) will be offered during the 2020-2021 academic year.
2. What precautions will UVU choirs take to minimize risk of COVID-19 infection?
Choir classes will be structured differently in 2020-2021 to significantly minimize risk of COVID-19 infection. In order to reduce the likelihood of coronavirus transmission, UVU choir classes will decrease exposure to coronavirus by implementing precautions. These expectations reflect the guidelines for safety dictated by UVU Safety/Emergency Management, as well as best practices recommended by vocal and medical experts in the Journal of Voice (
https://www.jvoice.org/article/S0892-1997(20)30245-9/abstract):
- Masks and/or face shields will be required for students, faculty, and staff when class is held face-to-face.
- Rehearsal classroom doors will be specified as either an entrance or exit to reduce contact through body traffic between classes.
- Everyone will wash their hands before and after each class.
- Everyone will avoid touching their own face and the instructor and students will refrain from physical contact.
- Distanced spacing of at least 6 feet maintained when class is held face-to-face.
- Students and faculty will collectively clean the classroom after each face-to-face rehearsal.
- A variety of learning modalities might be used, including Zoom rehearsals, distanced small-group sectionals, distanced outside rehearsals, distanced classroom rehearsals, and distanced Concert Hall rehearsals.
- Instructors may require each student to bring a tuning fork for outside rehearsals.
- No sharing of choral music folders will be allowed.
- Fewer public performances should be expected this academic year. Instructors may choose to host “in-formances” (choirs performing for one another at a distance in the Concert Hall); private recording sessions; private, live-streamed performances with performers spaced distantly; or public performances with performers and audiences spaced distantly.
* PLEASE REMEMBER: These precautions are in place for our collective safety in the choral learning environment. Please take every reasonable precaution OUTSIDE of class to avoid transmitting the disease. By following CDC and Utah state health guidelines in our daily routines, we are more likely to avoid transmission in class.
3. Is there still a risk of infection if I take a class like choir on campus?
Please know that it is impossible to gather in-person with zero risk of infection. We will collectively minimize that risk, but no one can guarantee zero risk with in-person interaction. If you elect to participate in choir classes this academic year, you are assuming the risk that comes with attending a class in-person on campus.
4. What if I get sick?
If you are presenting COVID-19 symptoms, please call UVU Student Health Services at 801-863-8876 rather than coming to campus. SHS will answer questions and give referrals to COVID-19 testing. You may also visit
https://www.testutah.com/ where you can take an online assessment to determine symptoms and receive a test if needed.
In past semesters, students who are ill and contagious have been asked to stay home while students who are no longer contagious or are on vocal rest are welcome to sit in the back of rehearsal to take notes and fill out an “Active Listening Form.” For the 2020-2021 academic year, so long as a student is ill, the student should stay home and watch class remotely. To receive attendance credit on those days, students must email the instructor a completed “Active Listening Form” for each day the student participated in class remotely.
5. What if I test positive for COVID-19?
Do not come to school! First, seek out appropriate professional medical services. Many of these are listed here (including the UVU COVID-19 Reporting Form):
https://www.uvu.edu/safety/coronavirus/student-faq.html After testing positive for COVID-19, CDC guidelines currently recommend quarantining for 14 days. Following that period, you are welcome back to campus. Make sure to email your instructor at the start of your absence so you can stay connected to the class remotely during your period of quarantining.
6. Will the postponed May 2020 UVU Chamber Choir tour to England be rescheduled for May 2021?
The UVU Chamber Choir will not tour internationally in 2020-2021. Current international, US government, and UVU travel restrictions make the planning and execution of a rescheduled tour to England impossible for 2021.
7. Lastly, are there resources to help UVU students handle stress, food insecurity, financial strain, or other health issues related to COVID-19?
Yes! UVU offers assistance in a variety of ways to students who are struggling with difficult situations related to the outbreak of COVID-19:
