Volunteer roles

Food bank preparation volunteer
In this role you will help packing food parcels, ensure that stock room shelves are neat, tidy and in order as well as keeping a list of items which is running low or needed. Usually required on a Wednesday between 10am-1pm (List is not exhaustive, there may be some additional tasks required)

Food bank assistant-
Welcoming guests at the door, checking guests in and handing food parcels to guests, keeping track of how many guests we attend to, signposting guests for further advice and support, managing queues and making guests feel as safe and welcomed as possible. Usually required on a Thursday between 10am -2pm (List is not exhaustive, there may be some additional tasks required)

Befrienders
Your role will be to speak with guests whilst they eat and spend time in the Larder. You will encourage conversations with guests and provide a listening ear for the guests. You will think of creative ways to engage the guests and ensure every one of the guests feel welcomed at the Larder. Usually required on a Thursday between 10am -2pm (List is not exhaustive, there may be some additional tasks required)

Kitchen assistant
Prepping food ingredients, washing dishes, serving food, keeping kitchen tidy and clean, making tea & coffee. Usually required on Wednesdays & Thursdays between 10-1pm (List is not exhaustive, there may be some additional tasks required)

Cook assistant
Preparing meals for take away hot food, providing manager with list of ingredients to buy, adhering to food and safety laws, ensuring that food being cooked is being correctly stored and providing allergens for guest knowledge, checking fridge temperatures regularly. Usually required on Wednesdays between 10am-2pm (List is not exhaustive, there may be some additional tasks required)

Clothing bank assistant
Ensuring clothes donations are put away in a neat and orderly way, keeping the clothing bank space clear. Assisting guests with items that they may need, recording how much clothing are given to guests and making the guests feel good about themselves.  Usually required on a Thursday between 10am -2pm (List is not exhaustive, there may be some additional tasks required)

Showers assistant
When guests come for a shower ensuring they are provided with toiletries, a clean towel and if needed liaising with cloth bank assistant for a fresh set of clothing and underwear. Ensuring to inform the guest the rules of using the showers and making sure the guests leave the showers clean and in a suitable state for use for other people.  Usually required on a Thursday between 10am -2pm(List is not exhaustive, there may be some additional tasks required)

Drivers
Drivers will be responsible for picking up food donations from partner businesses that wish to donate food to the Larder and bringing the donations to the larder. This role varies in terms of timings, some collections are in the evening and some during the day. If you wish to volunteer for this role it is essential you have access to a car to transport the goods collected.

At St Laurence’s Larder & Open Kitchen we ask that you commitment to at least a minimum of 2 hrs a week. We also welcome adhoc volunteers who cannot commit to a weekly commitment but are happy to fill in gaps when required.
