Screening for dyslexia is the responsibility of all schools. In Texas, it is required in K, 1st, and 7th grades. The reason screening is important: reading and writing are essential to learning! Screening can occur at any grade beyond the required grades, even at Texans Can. Since screenings are performed with all students, parent permission is not required.

The Texas Dyslexia Handbook was updated in 2021 to include several changes. Since the changes include that Dyslexia is considered a Specific Learning Disability, the new handbook included a single pathway of evaluation through Special Ed. Districts and Charter Schools must offer a Full and Individual Initial Evaluation (FIIE) for all students suspected of having Dyslexia. Previously Dyslexia could be evaluated through 504 or through special education.

This link tells about important changes with the new Texas Dyslexia Handbook:

Which of the following statements about Dyslexia evaluations are true:
If you suspect your student has Dyslexia and you would like an evaluation from Texans Can Academies, go to the website, https://www.texanscan.org/ , click on "Students and Parents," then click "Special Populations," then click "Child Find." Or just go to this link: https://www.texanscan.org/page/child-find.
There you will see a form to complete where you can request an evaluation. Parents can also write their request for an evaluation to the campus principal. The ARD facilitator or designee will contact you about scheduling a meeting to obtain informed consent for an FIIE.

Dyslexia can be tricky to identify, especially in high school. The SST, or student support team, has a  process in place for screening and data review. Your student may need a referral from the campus staff when they struggle with reading, writing, or spelling in classroom instruction.

When would a student need an SST referral from campus staff?

Dyslexia services are available at every TCA campus. Some students need special accommodations; others need specific course exemptions and specific programming to remediate reading, writing, and spelling. Students with dyslexia have a 504 plan or an IEP through Special Education. If you suspect a student may have Dyslexia, talk to your campus counselor about setting up an SST meeting.

TCA offers Dyslexia programs on every campus.
