Private Voice Application - Fall 2024
Welcome to the portal for private voice instruction through the University of Michigan's world-renowned Department of Voice! We are thrilled to support your interest and journey into the amazingly diverse world of vocal music (singing). Please read the following instructions carefully.

Voice 111.  If you have never had private voice instruction, we strongly encourage you to register for any of our sections of Voice 111 (Class Voice). Voice 111 is an innovative course that unpacks the rudiments of holistic vocology -- the science and application of healthy singing -- for any style. Whether you want to improve your voice to help your acapella group win that next competition or you want to grow in your vocal confidence so you can nail that next job interview, Voice 111 is the best place to begin.

Voice 150/500.  For those that have already taken Class Voice at U-M or elsewhere, or have previously received private voice training, then Voice 150 (Applied Lessons) is where you may want to be.  Voice 150 (undergrad) and Voice 500 (graduate) consists of 12 weekly one-on-one voice lessons with our talented and gifted graduate instructors. Voice 150/500 is where you work on solo repertoire in more detail and receiving vocal coaching on discovering your authentic sound.

Due to the popularity of both Voice 111 and Voice 150/500, please note that not all applicants can be placed.  By the same token, please note that we cannot guarantee placement with the teacher of your choice. If you are accepted into Voice 150/500, you will receive a class override email notifying you of what class and section to enroll in. This does NOT automatically place you in the class; you must enroll through Wolverine Access. If you are assigned to a studio (a specific instructor) and can no longer take lessons, please email Becky Olsen (beckyo@umich.edu) to let us know as soon as possible so we may offer your seat to another student. Failure to notify us will negatively impact the opportunity of your being placed in any Voice for non-majors offerings in subsequent semesters. Failure to register for Voice 150/500 by September 13, 2024 may result your being removed from the class.

This form will stop collecting applications on Monday, August 19 at 8am. Instructor assignments will be determined on a rolling basis through September 13, 2024, so thank you in advance for your patience.  Fill out the application, and we'll point you in the right direction!

Catherine Goode (soprano) - Singing is one of the truest forms of self- and artistic expression in which one will find much joy, comfort, and love. As a passionate educator and advocate for my students, I focus on individualized instruction, tailoring lessons to each student's musical/vocal goals and repertoire interests, and addressing each student's unique instrument and needs. I enjoy taking this journey with my students as they become independent thinkers, problem solvers, and practitioners!

Dorian Hall (baritone) - I believe that with thoughtful musicianship, a well-informed purpose, steadfast discipline, consistent practice, proper diet and rest and a healthy curiosity for beauty and the "beaux" arts, you, the voice student can rapidly transmogrify into a genuine artist. I sincerely extend a musical invitation not only to help you find your true voice but ultimately to know and discover more of thyself.

Chun Yung Rosanne Lee (soprano) - My primary goal is to guide students in activities that help them develop healthy vocal techniques and make musically informed choices. Viewing the study of voice as a chance for self-exploration, students will experiment with creativity and individuality, building self-discipline and confidence. We will focus on the anatomy, breathing, and diction for song preparation of various genres.

Andrew Smith (baritone) The goal with my teaching of voice is to develop a free and open sound through the vehicle of the breath. I am a teacher that is very breath conscious and sensation focused which are tools that will help you understand technique outside of our lessons. With a broad understanding of what is happening with the breath (breath consciousness) and what the different muscles of the body feel like while singing (focus of sensation), students will be able to grasp what it means to have a free and open sound, regardless of the genre.

Daiyao Zhong (mezzo-soprano) - In my teaching philosophy, I strongly believe that singing is an incredibly personal and meaningful form of self-expression. It's my mission to inspire my students to discover and embrace their unique voice, creating a supportive and nurturing environment for them to explore their vocal abilities and build confidence. I prioritize vocal health, breath support, and fundamental techniques in my teaching approach, helping students to develop a strong foundation in vocal technique that will enable them to sing with greater ease, emotion, and authenticity.

Yongxin Zhou (soprano) - I prioritize creating an enjoyable and accessible learning experience that encourages students to explore and express their unique voices without fear. My approach is centered on building a safe and supportive environment, where students can gain confidence, develop their technical skills, and cultivate a deeper passion for music. Through personalized guidance, I aim to unlock each student's potential, fostering not only their artistic growth but also their appreciation for the transformative power of music.
