Thursday 18.01.2024 | Culture, Real Estate & the Inner City
Location: Galerie de Schans
Address: Warmoesstraat 67

16:00 - 17:00 | Space of Urgency x City of Be Longing: Real estate & the next generation of culture
Massih Hutak (Verdedig Noord), Eva de Klerk (NDSM), Bonne Reijn (Galerie de Schans), Marlon Huysmans, Chafik Benhmidouch (City of Be Longing) MTBA
Language: English
In this panel session, we aim to first envision our ideal future for the city of Amsterdam concerning enabling and sustaining access to real estate. Subsequently, we transition back to the present. The current state highlights the urgency and challenges we collectively confront. To address this, cultural creators, representatives of creative spaces, incubators, and city makers engage in dialogue with real estate developers. We explore the challenges faced by the next generation of culture and discuss strategies for transforming challenges into opportunities.

17:15 - 18:30 | Space of Urgency: How to enable and sustain access to space?
Space of Urgency, Andreas Kruger (Belius Berlin), Lennart Siebert (WirWerkEV, Berlin)
Language: English
Building on the challenges and opportunities from the first session: What is happening in other cities in Holland and in Berlin? How are they dealing with political, social, and economic shifts? How do we map out available space more efficiently? How can we simplify bureaucratic access? What are intersectional models for collaboration or structures that enable access to space? Which approaches could help facilitate more access to space in the inner city of Amsterdam?

Central is the notion that there is a structural lack of space for 'Free Space' in Amsterdam. Whether that is Free Space in incubators, in creative and social vacancy management, night culture, commoning and self-build projects, the Culturele Stelling or other civic initiatives. The city is growing but affordable Free Space for all kinds of creatives and culture, let alone the next generation of culture, is not growing accordingly.
